Thieves "steel" whole building!
01/26/2012

With scrap prices at a premium, thefts of metal from abandoned buildings has become a problem, but thieves in the Chicago area stepped it up a notch recently by stealing an entire building.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times scrap metal thieves targeted an empty building in the southwest suburban community of Shorewood along I-55 in mid-January, first contacting a neighboring property owner to let him know the building had been sold and was going to be torn down that day. Steel from the structure was carted away in two semi-trucks. A day after the building had been dismantled, it was learned that it hadn’t been sold and no one had been given permission to tear it down. Police are investigating.
