Hazard Communication Programs

This weeks safety tip will focus on Hazard Communication Programs and the importance of them for your gutter company. It is better to learn about it here than from your local fire inspector or a safety compliance officer. Developing a program will reduce your liability should there be an accident as well as show your installers that safety is extremly important.

You need to first become familiar with the program requirements and the easiest way do this by reading a simple summary OSHA has provided in a pamphlet entitled "Chemical Hazard Communication," OSHA Publication Number 3084. A copy may be obtained from your local OSHA Area Office, or by contacting the OSHA Publications Office at (202) 523-9667.

One difference between this rule and many others adopted by OSHA is that this one is performance oriented. That means that you have the flexibility to adapt the rule to the needs of your gutter company, rather than having to follow specific, rigid requirements. It also means that you have to exercise more judgment to implement an appropriate and effective program.

If you have a question regarding compliance with the HCS, you should contact your local OSHA Area Office for assistance. In addition, each OSHA Regional Office has a Hazard Communication Coordinator who can answer your questions. Free consultation services are also available to assist employers, and information regarding these services can be obtained through the Area and Regional offices as well.
