Weekly Safety Tip - 02-02-09 02.29.09
A quick job site inspection by the crew leader upon arrival to each job can save your company money by eliminating potential safety problems before the crew even starts a job. It will also get your installers thinking about safety and risks on every job site they go to. This doesn’t have to be a long time consuming process, and creating a standardized checklist will ensure it is effective and efficient. The leading cause of injuries on gutter installations are electrical shock, falls from ladders and roofs, cuts from sharp objects and slipping or tripping. When looking at electrical hazards it is important to inspect the job site for any power lines that extension ladders and installers could come in contact with as well as the proper use of extension cords. Make sure the cord is grounded and has no splits or frays. For ladders it is important to inspect for proper function of locks, levelers and rungs. You should also inspect the landscape for any soft spots and unlevel terrain. Make sure you check what the state or federal requirements are regarding fall protection requirements to ensure compliance and installer protection. To reduce potential injury from sharp objects we recommend hand protection and making the installers aware of these hazards. To eliminate slipping and tripping inspect the routes that will be used and remove the potential hazards if possible. If the slip or trip risk can’t be eliminated ensure all installers are aware of the issue and change the rote to be used if possible.
